Just off the coast of Sandnessjøen lies Herøy — a vibrant archipelago of larger inhabited islands surrounded by thousands of smaller islets and skerries.

Where Mountains Meet the Sea

There are few places in the world where dramatic mountain peaks rise directly from an endless sea of islands. The Helgeland coast is one of them.

Just a short journey from Sandnessjøen Airport, the landscape unfolds into a breathtaking archipelago stretching from the inhabited islands of Herøy to countless smaller islets scattered across the horizon. Here, the ocean is never far away, and every turn reveals another hidden bay, white sandy beach, or granite shoreline shaped by centuries of wind, waves, and tides.

Watching over it all are The Seven Sisters—one of Norway's most iconic mountain ranges. Their unmistakable silhouette defines the horizon, creating a spectacular backdrop throughout the seasons. In winter, the mountains invite unforgettable ski adventures, where it is possible to climb from the shoreline to snow-covered summits before descending back to the sea. During the endless days of summer, the same landscape transforms into a playground of calm waters, vibrant birdlife, and islands waiting to be explored.

It is this rare meeting of ocean, mountains, and untouched nature that makes the region unlike anywhere else. The scenery is constantly changing with the shifting light, the weather, and the tides—yet it always retains a profound sense of peace.

Almendingen is part of this remarkable landscape. Set among the smaller islands of the archipelago, it offers a front-row seat to one of Scandinavia's last truly wild coastal environments—where nature is not simply the backdrop, but the destination itself.
